Grace Combs Bio and Reading/Video Tutorial Response

Oslomarka: a mountain park in Norway

I am now a senior and I will be completing my degrees in Film Studies and Anthropology this spring. I just returned from my study abroad trip in London and must say that it was the best experience of my life. I was able to travel to 11 countries total, which include several locations in England, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany, and France. It was unreal to learn and experience all of these cultures. This opportunity to travel has helped me personally grow in more ways than I can think of. I was even fortunate enough to have an experimental audiovisual criticism film (that I created while enrolled abroad) screen at the British Film Institute. After graduation, my dream career would be to create documentaries concerning anthropological research, particularly those associated with forensic osteology.

This will be my first year working on the Visions Film Festival and I am ready to face the challenges to help organize this event. I hope to further develop my networking skills this year in Visions as well as learning how to manage a busy schedule, work among a student-run event, build contacts, market, finance, and organize professional presentations.

Reading/Video Tutorial Response

I consider myself a fairly organized person. I keep a weekly academic calendar each year to help manage all of my course assignments and exams. Although this system has been beneficial to me throughout the years, I think Google Calendar will help me stay organized even more. I hate that this is my final year in college and I have not bothered to use it. With help from the tutorial, I found Google Calendar very easy to operate. The fact that this system can also be synced with my mobile device is a lifesaver! It is also beneficial to have my course times coordinated each week along with my assignments because it puts into perspective how much available time I have to work on them. Google Drive is another system that I am not too familiar with using, but its ability to share and coordinate files among other colleagues is astounding. I don’t know why I have used Facebook messenger as a reliable source of communication instead of Google Drive in the past.

I also found the Eisenhower matrix exercise very helpful. After reading the Procrastination/Time Management article, I defined myself as a “perfectionist” procrastinator. When facing a group of assignments, I always think to myself, “Oh this paper is really simple. It won’t take that long.” I end up doing smaller, less significant tasks first and then end up spending way too much time on my important paper while trying to make it perfect. The 4 Quadrants exercise has pushed me to focus on completing my important assignments as a first priority, no matter how easy I think of them to be and to save less significant tasks for later.
